Yankees Face Critical Decision on Aaron Judge as ALDS Opens Against Rays

The New York Yankees entered their American League Division Series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday night with a cloud of uncertainty hanging over their biggest star. Aaron Judge, the team's captain and offensive cornerstone, remains questionable after suffering a right calf strain in late September that has kept him out of action for two weeks.

Manager Aaron Boone has been tight-lipped about Judge's availability, repeating "I don't know" eight times when pressed for a timeline on his potential return. The Yankees have not finalized their ALDS roster, and sources suggest it seems likely Judge will be left off the 26-man roster for the best-of-five series that began Saturday at Tropicana Field.

The timing couldn't be worse for New York. The Yankees (93-68) clinched a wild card spot but face a formidable challenge in the Rays (94-64), who won 98 games during the regular season. Judge's absence leaves a massive hole in the middle of the lineup — the 32-year-old slugger hit .301 with 47 home runs and 120 RBIs during the regular season.

At Tropicana Field on Friday afternoon, Judge was spotted in workout gear, acknowledging arriving teammates. The slogan printed across his T-shirt read "No time like October" — an ironic message given the uncertainty around whether he'll actually be cleared to play this October.

The calf injury has stolen precious at-bats from Judge at the worst possible time. He hasn't faced live pitching in a competitive setting since September 18, when he experienced lower-leg tightness that prompted the Yankees to shut him down. The team initially hoped he would return for the final games of the regular season, but the strain proved more stubborn than anticipated.

Gerrit Cole took the mound for the Yankees in Game 1, facing off against Rays starter Drew Rasmussen. Cole (10-9, 3.61 ERA) has been solid but inconsistent this season, and the Yankees' offense will need to compensate for Judge's potential absence.

The ALDS format — a best-of-five series — leaves little margin for error. If the Yankees fall into an early hole without their captain, they may not have the firepower to climb back. The franchise hasn't won a World Series since 2009, and this year's squad entered October with championship aspirations despite Judge's injury casting doubt on those ambitions.

The AL Division Series also features the Chicago White Sox visiting the Cleveland Guardians and the Atlanta Braves traveling to face the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League. The San Diego Padres face the Milwaukee Brewers in the other NLDS matchup.

For the Yankees, the Aaron Judge question will dominate headlines until the team makes a final decision. Whether he suits up or watches from the bench, his absence — or limited presence — could define New York's postseason fate.
