Skubal Dominates in Sweltering Heat as Dodgers Take Game 1 Over Braves
Tarik Skubal pitched six scoreless innings in 100-degree conditions while the Dodgers' power trio launched home runs to secure a 5-3 NLDS victory.
The Los Angeles Dodgers seized control of the National League Division Series, defeating the Atlanta Braves 5-3 in Game 1 on Thursday at Dodger Stadium. Left-hander Tarik Skubal delivered a masterful performance in sweltering 100-degree heat, pitching six scoreless innings while the Dodgers' power trio of Teoscar Hernandez, Kyle Tucker, and Max Muncy launched home runs to break open the game.
Skubal, the Dodgers' ace acquired mid-season from Detroit, silenced the Braves' offense through six frames, allowing just four hits and striking out seven batters. The 27-year-old navigated the oppressive Southern California heat with precision command, retiring the final nine batters he faced. His composure under extreme conditions set the tone for a dominant playoff debut.
"Tarik gave us exactly what we needed," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said after the game. "Six innings in that heat, shutting down their lineup — that's what October baseball is about. He gave our bullpen a chance to close it out."
The Dodgers' offensive firepower erupted in the middle innings. Hernandez opened the scoring with a two-run shot in the fourth inning, his second postseason home run of the year. Tucker followed with a solo blast in the fifth, and Muncy added insurance with a two-run homer in the seventh. The trio combined for five runs batted in, providing Skubal and the Dodgers' bullpen with a comfortable cushion.
Atlanta's bats remained largely silent through seven innings, managing just four singles off Skubal. The Braves mounted a late rally in the eighth and ninth innings against the Dodgers' bullpen, scoring three runs, but couldn't complete the comeback. The Braves' playoff struggles at Dodger Stadium continued — they've now lost seven consecutive postseason games in Los Angeles dating back to 2018.
The victory gives the Dodgers a crucial 1-0 series lead as the best-of-five NLDS shifts to Game 2 on Saturday. Atlanta will send right-hander Spencer Strider to the mound, while Los Angeles counters with veteran Clayton Kershaw. The Braves face mounting pressure to even the series before potentially traveling back to Atlanta for Games 3 and 4.
With the win, the Dodgers improved to 6-1 in postseason games decided by three runs or fewer this October. Their blend of elite starting pitching and timely power hitting has made them the National League favorite to represent the circuit in the World Series. Skubal's playoff debut marked the latest in a string of dominant performances by Dodgers starters, who have held opponents to a combined 2.1 earned run average through the first round.
Game 2 is scheduled for Saturday evening at Dodger Stadium, with first pitch set for 8:07pm ET. The series will shift to Atlanta for Game 3 on Monday if necessary.
