Nvidia Agrees to Buy AI Platform Hugging Face for 12.9 Billion Dollars

Nvidia Agrees to Buy AI Platform Hugging Face for 12.9 Billion Dollars

Nvidia is closing in on one of the biggest acquisitions in its history. According to a report from The Information, the chip giant has agreed to buy Hugging Face, the widely used open-source AI platform, for $12.9 billion, a deal that would dramatically expand Nvidia's footprint beyond hardware and into the software layer that powers much of the AI industry.

Hugging Face has earned a reputation as the "GitHub for AI." Developers, researchers, and companies around the world use its repository to publish, discover, test, and deploy AI models and datasets. That central role in the open-source AI ecosystem is exactly what makes the platform so valuable to Nvidia, whose chips already power the vast majority of AI training and inference workloads globally.

For Nvidia, the acquisition is being read as a strategic move to lock in its open-model strategy and shore up its position against rivals racing to build their own end-to-end AI stacks. Owning the platform where so many developers already build and share models gives Nvidia a direct line into how those models get trained, tuned, and shipped, reinforcing demand for its own hardware in the process.

Would rank among Nvidia's largest acquisitions to date

Seen as a move to strengthen Nvidia's open-model strategy against rivals

If finalized, the purchase would rank among the largest deals in Nvidia's history and mark a significant escalation in the company's ambitions beyond chips. Nvidia has spent the past several years building out software tools, cloud partnerships, and developer platforms to keep customers locked into its ecosystem, and Hugging Face would give it a massive, built-in developer community overnight.

The move also comes as competition in the AI infrastructure space intensifies. Rivals including AMD, Google, and a growing field of custom chip startups have been pushing to chip away at Nvidia's dominant market share. Owning a platform as central to the AI development pipeline as Hugging Face gives Nvidia another lever to pull in that fight, beyond simply out-competing on raw silicon performance.

For the broader AI industry, the deal raises questions about consolidation. Hugging Face has positioned itself as a neutral, open platform that works across every major chip and cloud provider. Nvidia ownership could change that dynamic, even if the company maintains an open posture publicly, simply because of how much financial incentive it now has tied to its own hardware ecosystem.

Terms of the deal, including timing on regulatory review and expected close date, have not been officially confirmed by either company as of this writing. Given the size and strategic significance of the acquisition, expect scrutiny from antitrust regulators in the U.S. and potentially overseas, given how central Hugging Face has become to AI development worldwide.
