Connor Hellebuyck made nineteen saves in his second victory with New Jersey, while Arseny Gritsyuk and Jack Hughes each scored twice in a five to two win over Vegas.

Hellebuyck Powers Devils Past Golden Knights in Second Win Since Trade

Connor Hellebuyck made a powerful statement in his second game with the New Jersey Devils, backstopping the team to a decisive five to two victory over the Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena on Friday night. The win marks back-to-back victories for Hellebuyck since his blockbuster trade from Winnipeg, highlighting how quickly the future Hall of Fame goaltender has integrated into New Jersey's playoff push.

Hellebuyck turned away nineteen shots in the victory, building on his seventeen-save performance in his Devils debut against Dallas on Tuesday. The goaltender, acquired in a massive October 23 trade that sent forwards Dawson Mercer and Nick Bjugstad, goalie Nico Daws, plus multiple draft picks to the Jets, has provided exactly the elite netminding New Jersey was seeking.

"He's a Hall of Fame goalie," Devils defenseman Luke Hughes said after the game. "He's unbelievable. It's been fun to play with him."

Offensive Firepower Backs Stellar Goaltending

The Devils received offensive contributions from multiple sources, with Arseny Gritsyuk and Jack Hughes each notching two goals in the victory. Luke Hughes also found the back of the net, giving New Jersey a nine to five to zero record and their fifth win in six games despite coming off a five to two loss in Colorado on Wednesday.

Head coach Sheldon Keefe praised his team's response to the setback. "We're developing great confidence around here in our ability," Keefe said. "We had to refocus and get ready for here after the Colorado loss. It was another really good team. The guys responded the way we wanted. In terms of playing with a lead, it's probably the best third period we've had in the season."

Golden Knights Continue Slide Despite Marner Efforts

The Golden Knights struggled to build momentum, dropping to nine to five to one on the season with a one to three to one record in their last five games. Mark Stone and Ivan Barbashev provided Vegas' goals, while newly acquired Mitch Marner contributed two assists, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Devils' balanced attack.

Vegas coach Ryan Craig acknowledged his team's struggles finishing games with leads. "We haven't finished well at all. We haven't played with the lead as much as we did earlier," Craig said. "It could be those things I think force you to probably squeeze your stick a little bit. We shouldn't be concerned about that part of our game because when we do manage the puck, and we do check, we create those opportunities."

Luke Hughes opened scoring at five minutes and thirty-eight seconds of the first period after Anthony Mantha won a race to a loose puck and found Hughes skating to the top of the left circle for a one-timer. Stone tied the game on the power play at sixteen minutes and twenty-seven seconds, tipping Marner's shot past Hellebuyck, and Barbashev gave Vegas a two to one lead less than ninety seconds later.

The Devils battled back in the second period, with Jack Hughes scoring twice to give New Jersey a three to two advantage entering the third period. Gritsyuk added insurance goals in the final frame to seal the victory, providing the cushion Hellebuyck and the Devils defense needed to close out the Golden Knights.

The win positions New Jersey as a rising power in the Eastern Conference, with Hellebuyck's arrival potentially transforming their playoff aspirations. For Vegas, the loss extends a troubling trend of inconsistency that threatens to derail what began as a promising season.
