Diamondbacks Place Star Ketel Marte on Injured List After Bizarre No-Show Incident

The Arizona Diamondbacks placed All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte on the 10-day injured list on Thursday, capping a strange saga that began with his unexplained absence from Monday's game in Boston. The move comes as the Diamondbacks fight for a playoff spot, trailing the San Diego Padres by just one game in the National League wild card race.

Marte, a three-time All-Star hitting .249 with 21 home runs and 67 RBIs this season, was initially placed on the restricted list after failing to show up for Arizona's series opener against the Red Sox on August 17. General Manager Mike Hazen confirmed on Thursday that Marte traveled back to Phoenix for tests on his left knee, which revealed inflammation.

"We had difficulties in communication with Ketel during this period," manager Torey Lovullo told reporters. The team announced that Marte's IL stint cannot be backdated because he was on the restricted list, meaning his absence will extend into September at the earliest.

A Critical Time for Arizona's Playoff Push

The timing could not be worse for the Diamondbacks, who are vying for their first playoff appearance since their World Series run in 2023. At 67-61, Arizona sits just one game behind the Padres for the second wild card spot, making every game crucial in the season's final six weeks.

Manager Lovullo has been forced to rely on infielder Jose Fernandez, who was recalled from Triple-A to fill Marte's roster spot. Fernandez, while a solid defensive player, does not provide the offensive production Arizona has come to expect from the second base position.

Not the First Mysterious Absence

This is not the first time Marte has had an unexplained absence from the team. Last season, he was placed on the restricted list after his Arizona home was broken into during the All-Star break, causing him to miss three games while dealing with the personal matter.

According to iHeartRadio, Marte's agent, Charisse Espinosa-Dash, stated that he is "managing a personal matter and appreciates the support from fans and the team." However, team officials have not disclosed whether the current situation involves any personal issues beyond the knee inflammation.

The restricted list is typically used when a player is absent from the team for non-injury reasons, such as personal matters or disciplinary issues. Players on the restricted list do not receive pay and do not count toward the 40-man roster, making it a rare designation in Major League Baseball.

What's Next for the Diamondbacks

Arizona will need to rely on its remaining star players to pick up the slack during Marte's absence. The team's rotation has been solid, led by young ace Jacob Misiorowski, whose MLB-best ERA gives the Diamondbacks a foundation to build on. But without Marte's bat in the lineup, Arizona will need contributions from players like outfielder Corbin Carroll and first baseman Christian Walker to maintain their wild card position.

The Diamondbacks face a brutal schedule ahead, with series against playoff contenders including the Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies. Every win matters, and the loss of a player hitting 21 home runs creates a significant hole in the middle of the lineup.

For now, the organization is focused on supporting Marte's recovery while hoping his knee inflammation responds quickly to treatment. The Diamondbacks' playoff hopes may depend on getting their All-Star second baseman back on the field before September ends.
